Lot description:

Lakedaimon / Sparta

Lakedaimonian coinage of the 40s and 30s BC

Estimate: CHF 100.00

As (AE, 8.06 g, 20 mm, 5), c. 2 B.C. – A.D. 31. Bare head of Herakles to left. Rev. Jugate heads of the Dioscouri to left. Grunauer XXXIII, 1, 1 var. (same reverse die). RPC 1110. Rare. Attractive green patina. Uncleaned and encrusted as found, otherwise, good very fine.

A considerable number of asses of this type (205 to be exact), along with dupondii of Claudius (Grunauer XXXV, as below lots 932-934), turned up in a hoard supposedly found in the agora of Sparta before 1933 (S.P. Noe, A Bibliography of Greek Coin Hoards, 2nd edition. ANSNNM 78[1937], 1005), and long in the possession of an unnamed American collector. They have apparently since been dispersed with many now being in the BCD collection; others were sold through a variety of outlets. Unfortunately, they all seem to have been cleaned by a drastic form of electrolysis, a type of cleaning commonly used by excavation conservators in those days, and their surfaces have been almost totally destroyed (Grunauer pl. 22, a-m for examples of the Type XXXV pieces from this hoard, but all photographed from casts). Untouched examples of these two types are actually very rare, indeed. This coin, and those in lots 929-934 below, are very probably all from this hoard (several come from a collection that was formed in the early 20th century) but, luckily, are untouched (they all have the same patina) and would undoubtedly be very attractive, indeed, if professionally cleaned. See, also, below, the note to lot 932.
